MAHWAH, N.J. — A pair of friends will be opening Firehouse Subs in Mahwah on Wednesday, located at 380 Route 17 South.

After success with his first Firehouse Subs shop at the Palisades Center Mall in New York, Tejash Patel approached Smita Patel, a longtime family friend with significant experience in the food industry, about a potential partnership.

The two -- both from Maywood -- began looking into options for a restaurant location and decided on the city of Mahwah.

"We joined the Firehouse Subs family because the steamed subs differentiate us from the rest, and the brand’s dedication to public service allows people to enjoy an amazing product, all while giving back to the community," Tejash said.

"We couldn’t ask for a better place than Mahwah to open our first restaurant, or a more perfect brand to invest with and grow."

Founded by former firefighting brothers, the new Mahwah restaurant's decor reflects the founding family’s decades of fire and police service.

The eatery will round up orders to the nearest dollar, collect change and sell pickle buckets to put money into its fund to purchase equipment for first responders, the story says.

The Mahwah location boasts a hand-painted mural by Joe Puskas, depicting the Mahwah Fire Department Station 2 fire engine, and two firefighters in full turnout gear walking up the entrance to the Ramapo College of New Jersey, and Township of Mahwah Richard J. Martel Municipal Building Complex.

Firehouse Subs is committed to helping public safety organizations through Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation®, which has donated more than $340,100 in grants in the state of New Jersey.

Firehouse Subs -- with locations in Wayne and Totowa -- last year awarded more than $152,000-worth of lifesaving equipment to 11 public safety organizations in the tri-state region.

The Mahwah Firehouse Subs restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
