BLOOMINGDALE, N.J. — A Bloomingdale church will step 2,000 years back in time Saturday as part of its "One Night in Bethlehem."

Bloomingdale United Methodist Church will transform into a scene from Bethlehem to teach people about the origins of Christmas.

The free event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. at 65 Main St.

"Our church offers this as a gift to the community so that in this very busy time we can remember the reason for the season," organizer Evelyn Hershey told Daily Voice. "It's a nice family event."

Food from the old days will be available. Dried fruits, bread and grape juice will show guests what meals often looked like 2,000 years ago, Hershey said.

Crafts range from ornament and wreath decorations, a metal stamping project to mark amulets or necklaces, and pottery.

Live animals will visit and kids can feed and pet them for the manger scene, Hershey said.

Decorations were made several years ago for a backdrop reminiscent of Bethlehem. It took plenty of work originally but now the church can set up quickly.

"We're on easy street now," Hershey said.
