POMPTON LAKES, N.J. – Pompton Lakes residents, get ready to make some scarecrows.

The Pompton Lakes Business Improvement District is hosting its second annual scarecrow-making contest Saturday, Oct. 8. Between noon and 4 p.m., folks should bring their best handmade scarecrows to the lawn of the library, 333 Wanaque Ave. The scarecrows should be about 5 feet tall.

The scarecrows will be displayed on light poles downtown, along Wanaque Avenue.

Prizes of BID Bucks – a type of gift certificate that can be used at participating borough businesses – will be awarded. The winner will get $100 in BID Bucks, second place will get $80 in BID Bucks and third place will get $40 in BID Bucks.

A pumpkin-decorating party also will be held on the library lawn at the same time. Pumpkins will be free and there will be prizes for the best pumpkin.

According to its website, the BID’s mission is to “create a ‘place of destination’ and a ‘Highlands Gateway’ with a warm, clean, safe neighborhood environment for people to shop, dine and stroll in Pompton Lakes.
