Imagine shrieks of excitement from tens of thousands of spectators. That's what you can expect at the Greenwood Lake Air Show Aug. 12-14 in West Milford
The spectacle typically draws about 40,000 people during the three days, according to show owner Tim Wagner.
They come for the thrills and chills of watching expertly trained pilots perform stunts, including landing on a truck, and to watch daring performers like a wing-walker demonstrate her skill outside an aircraft.
"There's definitely a risk factor but the pilots train for thousands of hours," Wagner said.
This year's eighth annual air show features four pilots who have traveled across the country, performing in front of millions in their AT-6 Texans. The Texan Advanced Trainer, nicknamed “The Pilot Maker” served as a primary training platform for U.S. airmen in World War II, said a press release.Those pilots went on to fly P-51 Mustangs, F4U Corsairs, P-40 Warhawks, and more.
The Texan has a maximum level speed of 212 mph and a range of 870 miles.
Team leader Mark Henley has been flying in air shows for more than 20 years.
Like his teammates, his interest in aviation started at a young age. Henley's dad collected classic aircraft and he was given the chance to fly an array of vintage planes, including Stearmans, Cubs, Champs and Mustangs.
Bryan Regan, Steve Gustafson and Jimmy Fordham all have been flying since their teens, ultimately settling with the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team.
Carol Pilon of Quebec, Canada, has been a professional wing-walker since 2000. She started her career after seeing a TV commercial for a local air show. Pilon is the first -- and only -- woman to walk on a jet propelled aircraft, according to a press release.
