According to the National Day Calendar, the first pies appeared around 9500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age. Aside from being a source of sweet tooth satisfaction, pies have also been used over the years for film humor ever since Actor Ben Turpin received one in the face in the silent movie, "Mr. Flip" in 1909.

In Passaic County, residents have a host of pie places to choose from. Plan now to buy yours. And feel free to tell us any we've missed.

Clifton: The mouth-watering three-fruit lattice pie, comprised of blueberry, cherry and pineapple is a big hit at Styertowne Bakery, as is the shop's chocolate cream pie. Both are staples you'll find most everyday, though if you want anything else, i.e. apple or blueberry, you can always call ahead and order it. Grab a Fork: 1039 Bloomfield Ave., (973) 777-6193, www.styertownebakery.com/ .

Wayne: There are always pies at Packanack Bakery, which is known for its delicious desserts. Depending on the weather (and the possible snow), it's up in the air what they will be baking, but generally you can expect coconut custard, pecan, strawberry rhubarb and a deep dish apple, among other varieties. Grab a Fork: 1488 State Rte 23, (973) 694-5802.

Looking for something authentically Italian? Look no further than Palazzone 1960 where you'll find Italian cheesecake pie and a chestnut pie. Grab a Fork: 190 NJ-23, (973) 256-2734, www.palazzone1960.com/ .

Gencarelli's has all the usual favorites: apple, blueberry, lemon and cherry. Grab a Fork: 321 Valley Rd., (973)872-0500, www.gencarellisbakery.com/ .

Hawthorne: Il Dolce Pastry Shop features a variety of pies: blueberry, cherry and apple crumb along with a mixed fruit option made with peach, blueberry and cherry. Grab a Fork : 674 Lafayette Ave., (973) 427-8649, www.ildolcepastryshop.net/ .

Pompton Lakes: The classic apple pie is yours for the taking at Pompton Lakes Bakery where you'll also find cherry and blueberry. These also come in crumb varieties. Grab a Fork: 17 Wanaque Ave., (973) 835-2381.
