Clifton's Plaza Bagel & Deli Snags Honors In DVlicious Best Bagel Contest

CLIFTON, N.J. -- It’s impossible to live here and not have a bagel opinion. The New York area, as everyone knows, is the bagel capital of the world. And yes, it’s worth waiting in line on a Sunday morning to get one of these doughy wonders fresh out of the oven. Toasting, as a bagel purist knows, is not necessary when you buy the very best.

Plaza Bagel & Deli, 850 Van Houton Ave., Clifton, (973) 777-2094

What Makes Them Bagelicious: The minute you see the poster of The Ramones -- the first band to define the punk rock sound in the 1970s -- hanging by the front door, you know you’re in for something different. True Plaza fans, where the baking is done continuously, call it the CBGB of bagel shops. The Prophets of Addiction, a rock group from Seattle, have been known to pop in for a bite.

Crazy Flavors: Plaza changes it up a lot, but usually has 20 plus varieties including pretzel and honey and oats that come in many shapes, including flattened and twists. Fans claim it has the best THC in New Jersey. For those in the know, that’s tangy Taylor ham (aka pork roll), a regional delicacy, browned ever so slightly and served with melted cheese, on a bagel or roll. (Don't forget the ketchup) For spreads, which also change, try maple bacon cream cheese and chocolate hazelnut.

Reminder: The contest ends Monday, April 25 at 5 p.m. You can vote multiple times, albeit once per day.
