PASSAIC COUNTY, N.J. -- Are you an energetic Passaic County community member looking to spearhead a garden? How does $2,500 to kick off your project sound?

City Green in partnership with the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders will be offering grant money as part of their Dig In! Community Garden program.

The initiative, which is about to enter its third year, aims to beautify the county's neighborhoods and enhance residents' lifestyles, according to the program organizers.

The grants are designed to help community groups, faith-based organizations, municipal "adopt-a-lot" programs, garden clubs, green teams and neighborhood associations, organizers said. School gardeners, for-profit and commercial entities should not apply.

Those interested in applying for a grant should complete the necessary application forms by Jan. 30. Those applying for the first time are additionally required to complete a technical assistance session with City Green prior to submitting their completed application.

According to organizers, those applying for a first-year grant of $2,500 will have to use the money for site preparation, garden construction, soil amendments, plant materials, fencing, compost, rain barrels, irrigation, water hook up and other necessities. Applications also are acceptable from those wishing to improve an existing garden. A small match is required.

City Green will notify grant winners of their decision within three weeks of receiving the application. Accepted applicants must attend a Dig In! Award Workshop.
