To raise funds for research and honor the memory of their parents, Dennis Wirth and Kristina Ferreira will be participating in the Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium on July 15. The funds they raise will go to the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.

A Valley Hospital chemo nurse who treated their parents – Kathleen and Dennis Wirth -- will also be participating in the run.

Their mother Kathleen, a 22-year survivor of Hodgkin Lymphoma, passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2013, just months before Kristina’s wedding, which she helped plan.

Two years later, their father Dennis was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. Before he died in March, he was able to hold Kristina’s first-born child.
