The change is set to take effect on Sept. 1, but if four of seven nearby towns don’t adopt similar measures within six months, it can be repealed, according to the story.

Some business representatives spoke out against the measure, and Councilman Ray Yazdi said that if Bloomingdale upped the age, 19-year-olds could simply buy cigarettes in nearby towns, the story says.

Officials hoped the change could help prevent young people from developing nicotine addictions, according to the story.
