Frank Abate, president of the Pompton Lakes Republican Club, helped organize a free dinner for veterans last month.

After a few weeks of evaluating, he's already begun planning for next year.

More than 90 people attended the pasta dinner, which raised $500 for the Pompton Lakes VFW and the Disabled American Veterans organization.

"Next year we plan to do more and have a bigger event with the hope to reach more Pompton Lakes veterans and to raise funds to help vets in need in our area," Abate told Daily Voice.

The 2016 dinner is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 12, the day after Veterans Day.

Co-organizer Dave Rowan said he expected no more than 50 people at this year's event, making for a surprise turnout.

Veterans from the Vietnam War, Korean War, and World War II attended this year's event, the organizers said.
