PASSAIC COUNTY, N.J. -- The state has begun auctioning farm leases to put 2,744 acres of land into agricultural use. The auctions are open to all interested farmers.
Tracts in Vernon and West Milford, Morris, Sussex and Warren counties will be in the Northern Auction on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at Pequest Trout Hatchery, 605 Pequest Road, Oxford. A total of 45 plots will be auctioned this year, in an ongoing program -- 46 parcels were leased last year.
The Central Auction is Thursday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Assunpink Wildlife Management Area, Conservation Building, 1 Eldridge Road, Robbinsville.
According to Rich Boornazian, a Department of Environmental Protection assistant commissioner, the department has wanted to support agriculture by leasing “appropriate locations” on dedicated open space for some time.
