WANAQUE- A Wanaque organization is hoping to add a little historical perspective to some of the local buildings.

Residents can sponsor a historic photo to be placed at Wanaque Town Hall or the Wanaque Library.

About half of the planned pictures had been claimed as of Friday, Oct. 2, according to Marie Mahler, chairperson of the Wanaque Historic Commission.

The plan is to decorate Town Hall and the library with photos of years gone by.

The commission didn't have the funds to have them all printed and framed, so the members asked residents for help. About 25 of the 50 potential pictures have been sponsored so far, Mahler said.

Wanaque has plenty of history to display, she said.

"We have a lot of older people in town who appreciate the good old days for whatever they were," Mahler told Daily Voice. "I think people are happy to see some of the history saved. And what else are we going to decorate the walls with? At least these have some meaning."

The photos, mostly in black and white, show street scenes from the 1930s, some of the old schools and churches, and the spot of a former hotel that now features an ice cream shop.

The photographs will be approximately 13 by 20 inches and will be placed in a dark walnut frame. A gold plaque will be engraved with the sponsors' information.

No pictures have been placed in Wanaque yet, but the historic commission is hoping to have some ready by Oct. 17, Mahler said.

Once finished, Senior Library Assistant Paddi McClure said the staff will be more than ready.

"We've been wanting some new photos from the town for quite awhile," McClure said. "We're just really excited."
