Adrienne Smith, a 43-year-old surgical technician, and her brother, Orville Cousins, “purchased materials that were used in connection with the desecration” of 44-year-old Randolph Smith, Bergen County Proecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.

“Some of those materials were subsequently recovered from the [couple’s] Bergenfield residence,” the prosecutor said.

Burlington city and county police were notified on Jan. 12 of the discovery of remains in the city that were later identified as Smith’s, Grewal said.

The cause of death was determined to be homicide, authorities said.

Orville Cousins, 40, who is unemployed and lives in the Bronx, remained held in New York City after his arrest on Jan. 15, the prosecutor said.

On Thursday, members of the prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit located and arrested Adrienne Smith at a relative’s home in North Brunswick, he said.

She was being held in the Bergen County Jail.

Both are charged with desecration of human remains. Smith, who has a first appearance scheduled for Saturday in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, also is charged with hindering, the prosecutor said.

A potential killer hadn’t yet been identified. Grewal said the investigation was continuing.

Randolph Smith left his home with "an unknown person" around 8:30 p.m. Dec. 25, Bergenfield Capt. Mustafa Rabboh said police were told when his wife reported him missing on Jan. 2.

He didn't have a car, police said.

Grewal thanked the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, Burlington City Police Department, Bergenfield Police Department, New York City Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
