“Patrolman Joseph Wargo’s Law” directs the state Department of Transportation to develop the program to recognize the sacrifices of first responders.
It was named for Mount Arlington Police Officer Joseph Wargo, who was killed when his cruiser was struck head-on by a vehicle operated by a drunk driver on Route 80 in October 2011.
“Our police, firefighters and rescue personnel put their lives on the line every day,” said Assembly Republican Whip Scott T. Rumana (R – Passaic, Bergen, Essex and Morris), one of the measure's co-sponsors.
“This bill establishes a standard for honoring those who die in the service of others," Rumana said. "The signs will be a poignant reminder to both residents and travelers of the heroic and selfless acts of our public servants."
