Detectives investigating "several detailed tips" about drug dealing at a Main Street home watched William Fuentes, 26, emerge from inside and sell the bag of crack to 49-year-old William Marin of Wayne, Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said.
The investigators followed each as they split up, he said.
One entered a nearby business and cornered Marin, who "quickly reached into his pants pocket, retrieved a small baggie that was immediately recognized as packaged crack cocaine and put it in his mouth," Berdnik said.
The detective grabbed him by the throat to get him from swallowing the bag, then fought off Marin, who "began swinging his right hand and refused to place his hands behind his back to be handcuffed," the sheriff said.
Marin spit out the bag and was taken into custody, he said.
Meanwhile, detectives following Fuentes arrested him and searched the home -- where Berdnik said they seized 480 envelopes of heroin for sale, two grams of raw heroin, two dozen backs of crack and $1,450 in suspected drug proceeds.
Fuentes and Marin were released on various drug charges pending detention hearings, under New Jersey's 2017 Bail Reform & Speedy Trial Act. Marin also was charged with resisting arrest, the sheriff said.
