MAHWAH, N.J. -- A 26-year-old Oakland driver was critically injured when her car was struck by a falling tree on Ramapo Valley Road in Mahwah during Wednesday afternoon's high winds, authorities said.

Responding officers rendered aid to the woman, who was alone in the Hyundai Elantra when it was hit by the 100-foot tree, Police Chief James Batelli told Daily Voice.

Mahwah Ambulance and Rescue Squad took her to Hackensack University Medical Center with critical facial and internal injuries, Batelli said.

Wind gusts were somewhere around 35 to 40 miles an hour when the crash occurred, the chief said.
