Clinton J. Degroat was charged with murder and weapons offenses, among other counts, in the killing of Nicole Sierra, also 38, just before midnight Thursday, Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Ringwood Police Chief Joseph J. Walker said.

He was ordered held in the Passaic County Jail pending a hearing, they said.

Minutes before midnight, Degroat, who had a previous dating relationship with Sierra, "appeared" at her Van Dunk Lane home, Valdes and Walker said in a release.

Following an argument with "a male visitor" there, they alleged, Degroat "left the home and returned with a shotgun."

Degroat then fired "through the glass door of her house," they wrote.

A shotgun was recovered nearby and Degroat was arrested, the chief and prosecutor added.

Valdes asked that anyone with additional information about the incident to contact her office on its confidential line at 1-877-370PCPO or tips@passaiccountynj.org.

Or call Ringwood police: (973) 962-7017.
