YOU READ IT HERE FIRST : A special team of NJ State Police troopers rescued an 82-year-old man who had suffered a heart attack while hiking in Ringwood, carefully hoisting him from a perilous cliff to a helicopter and getting him to the hospital just in time.

Ringwood police found him in a wooded area atop Wyanokie High Point in Norvin Green State Forest, said State Police Capt. Gerald Lewis, Jr., the agency’s director of commucations.

NJSP Lt. Daniel Mitten and Sgt. Pal Approvato were lowered to the rocky mountain top, where two local officers were tending to him, the captain said.  “They had made the over-30-minute hike up the challenging terrain but were unable to get the victim down the mountain safely in a timely manner,” Lewis said.

The hiker, who was experiencing chest pains, was immediately packaged and secured into a basket and hoisted by Sgt. Toby Hill and Trooper Adam Wrede to the helicopter, piloted by Lt. Lloyd Pryor.

Mitten and Approvato stayed behind as the hiker was taken five miles to a landing zone, where he was transferred to another State Police helicopter that whisked him to Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Lewis proudly noted that the “accelerated delivery within the golden hour”of the patient, indeed saved his life.
