Just after 3:30 p.m. on May 15, Detective Ed Schroeder was conducting an unrelated investigation when he noticed a car parked in a wooded area near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and the Boulevard in Haskell, police said.

While checking on the unoccupied vehicle, he observed a male and a female wrapping their biceps and preparing to inject themselves — so he approached the suspects and stopped them.

During the course of his investigation, Schroeder observed 15 glassines of suspected heroin and multiple syringes — both new and uncapped, police said.

Both suspects indicated they did not have the opportunity to inject anything — that's when Sgt. Kevin LaCouture and Officer Lou Montegari arrived to assist the detective in the arrest of the individuals, according to police.

They were transported to headquarters for processing where they were charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and posession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Both were released pending a Superior Court Appearance.
