Little Ferry Schools Enforce Sick Day Policy After Widespread Outbreak

LITTLE FERRY, N.J. — The Little Ferry school district will enforce a strict policy on sick days beginning Monday, after Superintendent Frank R. Scarafile closed schools last week for disinfecting purposes.

Supt. Frank Scarafile closed Little Ferry schools Friday after an outbreak of the flu and flu like symptons.

Last week, a "staggering" 14 percent of students stayed home with the flu and flu-like symptoms, and 10 were sent home each day, Scarafile said.

"This is due in part to parents sending in their children when they display symptoms or the children are sent back to school the day after being sent home," Scarafile said.

"If your child is sent home from school with a fever, they will not be allowed to attend school the next day."

The new policy is necessary to break the cycle of illness in the schools, Scarafile said.
