To be chosen, students had to write an essay on the positive and negative impacts of social media. Out of the almost 30 essays submitted, four were chosen for the program. The winners of each police rank were:

Chief for the Day - Hailie Tritschler of Wanaque Elementary School

Detective Captain for the Day - Ryan O'Keefe of Haskell Elementary School

Lieutenant for the Day - Eric Bloom of Haskell Elementary School

Lieutenant for the Day - Kayla Tankard of Haskell Elementary School

After being picked up from their schools by Wanaque police officers, the students started their day with a swearing-in from Wanaque Mayor Dan Mahler in front of their families, Wanaque School Principal Charles Frick, Haskell School Principal Celia Morales and Wanaque police officers.

After that, there was a tour of the building to meet all the borough employees with whom they would be working.

The students then spent some time with the officers whose jobs they were taking over for the day and did some police work. After lunch, the students participated in a table top emergency action plan in the Emergency Operations Center, where the officers planned for a simulated hurricane.

Then, just like with all police officers, it was time for paperwork -- specifically an official police report detailing their day.

"All of the 'officers' did a fantastic job," said Wanaque Police Capt. Kenneth Fackina. "It was clear they were taking their tasks seriously and we were proud to work with them."
