Wayne Police Say Ex-Con In Chase Pushed Officer In Front Of Car

WAYNE, N.J. — Wayne police charged a Belleville ex-con with aggravated assault, among other offenses, after they said he backed his car into two officers and pushed another in front of an oncoming vehicle during a weekend chase down Route 23.

Two officers were treated at Chilton Hospital for cuts and bruises after the run-in with Nicholas Vizzone, 22, Capt. Laurence Martin said.

Police found Vizzone with marijuana in his car in the parking lot of the Hooters around 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Martin said.

Vizzone -- who records show has an extensive criminal history -- put his vehicle in reverse and it hit two officers, knocking them to the ground, before it sped off down the highway, he said.

Officers from Newark, Belleville and the Essex County Sheriff's Department joined Wayne police in pursuing Vizzone before he finally stopped in Newark, the captain said.

Once out of his car, Vizzone fought with a Wayne officer and pushed him in front of incoming Essex County Sheriff car responding to the scene, he said.

Vizzone was hospitalized at Chilton with arm pain from a collision that occurred as he fled, Martin said.

A judge ordered him held on $50,000 bail on various aggravated assault, eluding and drug possession charges. He also received several summonses, Martin said.
